Fact: Green's Karate is the largest and only full-time Traditional Karate school in Chattanooga, Tennessee!
Fact: Karate is from Japan, Tae Kwon Do is from Korean, and Kung Fu is from China.
How it all started:
Green's Karate originally started in Soldotna, Alaska in 1998 on the Kenai Peninsula. The Kenai Peninsula is 120 miles south of Anchorage and is famous for its world class king salmon fishing on the Kenai River. Green's Karate was the largest and to this day still was the largest martial arts school in the history of the Kenai Peninsula. Green's Karate started with only 30 students and grew to 180 students in 11 months. Green's Karate had 2 locations with a grand total of 6,000 square feet. After a major shift in the local economy for the worse. The collective population of 10,000 (within 30 square miles) decreased dramatically (50% in 9 months) in the later part of 2000. Because of the economic disaster, Sensei Green closed his two schools and then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a UH-60 Blackhawk Crewchief (mechanic and gunner) After the 2 years in the Army, Sensei Green restarted his school in Chattanooga, Tennessee in the Winter of 2003.
The Whole Chattanooga story:
The actual beginning started like this; Green's Karate started at Cosmo Fitness (Now Partyville) on Hixson Pike & didn't last long at that location. We had only one student and Sensei Green put out 10,000 flyers to get the word out about the new karate school. Green's Karate at that time wasn't given a chance at that particular location. The employees at the establishment would try to sabotage what Green's Karate was trying to start as a serious Karate school. There are a lot of schools that open and close but Green's Karate is not one of these schools. It didn't work out at this particular location. The motto is never give up, never stop trying. Green's Karate wasn't given a chance. Who would with a brand new school in Chattanooga & you know nobody. Nothing seemed to work then, finally we had a break through. The Downtown Y.M.C.A. saw the vision of what Green's Karate wanted to do and it blossomed from there. For the beginning, Green's Karate from the beginning was a separate entity of the YMCA & remained that way until June of 07 when we moved onto our new & larger location. The Downtown Y.M.C.A's $8,000,000.00 renovation effected Green's Karate's lease so we moved. While at the Y.M.C.A., Green's Karate taught a variety of classes for the 4 years that they were there. Classes such as the Y.M.C.A. Sunshine Class, Middle School Outreach, Lights On Program, and 4 summer camps with 80 to 180 in each camp. The first summer camp had 80, the second and third 120 and the fourth year with 180 children. The final year there were over 50 students in a class. Green's Karate taught the children 5 days a week throughout the summer. Sunshine Karate was a YMCA class that reaches out to students with special needs and its absolutely free & always will be. Now it is known as Green's Karate "special needs" karate class.
New Home
Green's Karate has found its new home at 4200 N. Access Road (across from Dupont Elementary). This is only about 1.5 miles from where we originally started in Chattanooga and 4 years later. At our new location you will find plenty of parking, a clean & well lit dojo, and of course a gym called "Fitness Master" which also is the home of the "Building Better Athletes" (BBA). In just 4 years, BBA has taught over 2,500 clients. BBA works with students mostly from ages 7 to 18 and adults to help increase their ability in a wide variety of sports. Green's Karate has taught over 2000 clients in the same time frame. About 1/2 of those clients that Green's Karate taught were from the YMCA Summer Camp, Middle School Outreach (Middle Schoolers), Lights On Program (high schoolers), and also the YMCA's daycare classes. Another 3,000 students were trained in Alaska in 1998 thru 2001.
Brandon Earnshaw makes History!!!
In August of 2003, The Chattanooga Times Free Press wrote an article regarding the karate teachings of Green's Karate to special needs children. One of the headlines read "Children with Autism seem to thrive in karate classes". In April of 2006, the Chattanooga Time Free Press published the article about Brandon Earnshaw & that he won & earned two bronze medals in the U.S.A.N.K.F. (usankf.org) (The U.S.A.N.K.F. is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee) Regional Qualifier in Memphis, Tennessee. This was Brandon's fourth tournament and he actually qualified at the St. Alban's Mountain State Karate Championship after 18 months of training. His parent's and him didn't fill out the paperwork to send him to Nationals because this tournament was the first for the students of Green's Karate in Chattanooga at the time and there were no plans for Nationals. Green’s Karate has had students qualify for Nationals in the year 2000 in Alaska.
CNN News Morning Show "American Morning"
Sensei Green of Green's Karate is the owner/head instructor/operator of Green's Karate. He has taught over 17,200 classes as of June 2007. Green's Karate produced "the first person in history with autism to qualify for the Karate Nationals in the non-handicap division". The show originally aired on Local CBS affiliate WDEF Channel 12 with Rick Nyman. Rick Nyman interviewed Brandon, his mother & Sensei Green. Local News Affiliate NBC's WRCB and Leslie Dale covered the story and also brought in a expert from Sisken’s Children Institute. She informed the public about autism and it was WRCB’s top story. WDEF followed up with the conclusion on Brandon's tournament in which he finished 5th in kata in the Nation in his age group, 11 year old beginner boys. He also sparred the gold medalist. Brandon did awesome!
"Local Autistic Karate Kids qualify for Karate Nationals" the headline read.
In 2007, 6 of Green's Karate students competed in the U.S.A.N.K.F. Regional Qualifier in Memphis, Tennessee. Brandon qualified for a second time while Alex Davidson, a newcomer with only 11 months training qualified too. As far as we know, Alex become the second person with autism to qualify for the Karate Nationals in the non-handicap division. In Memphis, Alex earned two silver medals. You can go to www.wdef.com then type in karate and watch video titled "Karate Kids qualify for Karate Nationals". The video will be there for a limited time.
The Passion and Joy of working with special needs children:
Sensei Green's passion to work with special needs children all started when he was 18 years old and his 5th degree Black Belt instructor told him to teach a boy that had only one arm, one leg, and half a hip. The boy was outfitted with prosthetics for his missing arm, leg, & hip. The boy was six years old and named Octavian Mosesian. 4 months later he earned his yellow belt. Sensei Green had the idea that if this boy could do it then any kid or adult could do it. Immediately, Sensei Green started working with students with A.D.D., A.D.H.D., Down Syndrome, Spinal Bifida, Mentally Retarded (M.R.), Cerebral Palsy, blind & deaf. When he arrived in Chattanooga in 2003, and he started working with children with Autism at that time. He also works with children on the Autism spectrum including Asbergers. Green's Karate offers a free 30-minute special needs class on Monday's at 4:15P.M.

Certified Worldwide through the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai!!!
Green's Karate is certified Worldwide through the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai. The President of this Association is Kenwa Kuwako & the International Director is Sensei Katsutaka Tanaka. Sensei Green is the director for all of Tennessee for the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai. The founder of Shito-Ryu is Kenwa Mabuni and hence therefore the name Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai. There is a direct lineage between the founder of Shito-Ryu, the President of the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai (Kenwa Kuwako) , Sensei Tanaka of Tanaka's Martial Arts Academy & Sensei Green of Green's Karate.
Other Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai locations:
There are other branches for the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai with the same high standards and they are located in Oklahoma, Colorado, Pullman, Washington & Seattle, Washington. There are 5 other branches of the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai in Alaska. Find all of these website for all the schools tanakasmartialartsacademy.com
There are also 23 branch dojo’s of Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai in Japan.
Every belt that you earn at Green's Karate is personally signed with your name in Japanese Kata kana/Kanji. Sensei Tanaka personally signs all the names for all the students at all of the schools. Only 1 out of 100 martial arts schools would have this in their organization & Green's Karate is one of them.
Green's Karate is in the top 10%....
To advance to any belt is up to each student. It is the student choice not the instructors or the parents. This way the fate of the test is up to the student. In Karate, some students learn faster than others but sometimes the better martial artist is the one that takes their time to learn Karate. Our association is a U.S. branch of the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai. Students in the Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai are always striving for excellence inside the dojo and in life. Always using good manners, respect, and self-discipline. The purpose of practicing Karate is to develop ones character and to become a better person. Only 1 out of 100 makes it to black belt in Traditional Karate. It takes 4 years of training (average) and by that time you should definitely feel that you can protect yourself. It takes a plethora of dedication by not only the student but also the instructor. A key to having a successful Full-Time Traditional Karate school is to have a lot of variety of classes and times plus limiting the class size to no more than 15. With 15 or less students, you are ensured you will have a great class.
Green's Karate for Self-Defense or National Championships
Green's Karate teaches the difference between real life situations and tournaments. You will learn how to get out of any possible grab from standing up with ease and simple but very effective techniques. You also learn how to defend yourself while on the ground and how to demolish your opponent. As for tournaments, some students really enjoy the tournament setting. We make sure each student is thoroughly educated in both areas this way you can be the best you can be. Tournaments teach you about yourself and how to get better. Green's Karate competes in the highest level of traditional Karate possible which is the USA-N.K.F. (National Karate-Do Federation) The USA-N.K.F. is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. When Karate becomes a Olympic sport then the USA-N.K.F. will be the front runner and then will be considered a Olympic sport within the next 4 to 6 years. Go and visit their website at. www.usankf.org
Tournament Results!
Green's Karate teaches students with and without special needs! Green's Karate has produced over 100 medalists in only 7 tournaments with 7 students average & have excellent tournament results.
90% of all Green's Karate students in local tournaments place in the top 4 and 75% in the top 3. At the National level, 90% of Green's Karate students place in the top 5 and 75% in the top 4. Green's Karate produced their first National Champion on their first try. Eltoran Ball had only 3 years training and earned a gold in kata and a silver in kumite. His son (12) placed 4th and kumite and 5th in kata. He was the lowest belt in his division (not even a brown or black belt) and went up against brown and black belts. There were 25 competitors in his division. Chad Hopkins had only 9 months training and earned a bronze in kumite and 4th in kata while his 5 year old son Caleb who was 5, earned two 4th places in kata and kumite. In Eltoran's first tournament with only two years training he earned two gold medals. His son Cameron has done the same too! Doug D. earned two silvers in his first tournament and only tournament so far.
Green's Karate competed in the Georgia Karate League's tournament in Atlanta in November and February every year. In March-April they head to Memphis for the U.S.A.N.K.F. Regional Qualifier. In July, Green's Karate go to the National Championships which is held somewhere differently every year. In 2006 it was held in Ft. Lauderdale. In 2007, its held in Charleston, WV and in 2008 it will be held in Rhode Island.
In Alaska, Sensei Green went to his first tournament as a school owner & head instructor. He took 14 students to their first tournament in 1999 called the "Anchorage Karate Championships". Green's Karate placed 3rd overall out of 17 other martial arts schools and that was definitely a shock. In our second and final appearance in the "Alaska State Championships" now known as the "Top of the World" Karate Championships, they had 25 competitors and took 2nd out of 17 schools. This is the best they could have done because Sensei Tanaka who is Sensei Green's instructor has taken 1st place in both of these tournaments for over 33 consecutive years. Green's Karate was very happy to say the least on the results and had almost every student qualify for the National Championships in May of 2000. The last tournament also served as a Regional Qualifier for the National Championships. Not one student was able to go though because of how far it was to compete.
Green's Karate has a very great record (statistics) for tournaments and this is how they stand:
Local Tournaments including: AAU in Atlanta and tournaments in Alaska. 90% of students are in the top 4. 75% in the top 3. Over 100 medalists including 4 and 5 year old gold medalist state champions.
USA-N.K.F. Regional and Nationals: In Memphis in March every year with 100% qualified for 2 years in a row. 90% of Green's Karate Students place in the top 4. 75% place in the top 3.
Sensei Green's Personal Tournament Experience
Sensei Green won his first state championships tournament on his first try when he was 15 years old in kumite. Later on in 1999 he competed against Sensei Tanaka's best. The three gentlemen: John Roschber, Adrian Valera, and Christopher Hodgin were currently 3rd in the world combined as a team in team kata. This is the first and last time that the U.S. has had any team medal in team kata. They were also undefeated in team kata at the National level for 7 consecutive years. In 1999 and 2000, in order to go to the National Championships, any competitor would have to place in the top 3. These three men always took the gold, silver, or bronze. So the best he could do at that time was 4th. Talk about competition! As of 2003 you need to be in the top 6 & in 2007 in order to qualify you need to be in the top 8.
Sensei Green has trained with 4 different World Champions!
Sensei Green has had the opportunity to train with people such as 8th Degree Black Belt Sensei Katsutaka Tanaka. Larry Lam, (T.M.N.T. movies #2 and #3) he played Leonardo in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chris Cassamasa (Mortal Kombat-Scorpion) Seminar at Okamoto's Karate), Yoshihiro T. Okamoto (I.S.K.A. World Champions) for two consecutive years) and George Chung. Delfin Labrador (Aikado, Karate, Iiado) George Chung is a 5-time World Champion, 7 degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, owns 12 martial arts schools in California, hired by the San Francisco 49er's to teach the offensive and defensive line how to hit the opponent harder, evade, trap, and other football techniques and is in the Hall of Fame with Bruce Lee & Chuck Norris.

Green's Karate competes in Atlanta and other places because if they competed here in Chattanooga then they would get disqualified because of the rules. In Karate, in sparring, Karate students are allowed to sweep, trip, throw the opponent, and punch the opponent on the ground. In Karate Nationals, there are no feet gear, chest protector, or shin guards. Head gear is optional! Everything that was mentioned above is opposite for Tae Kwon Do so... Karate students will get disqualified in Tae Kwon Do tournaments. Presently, 80% of martial arts in Chattanooga is Tae Kwon Do.
